How to Read Your Birth Chart, Step by Step
June 15, 2026 · 7 min read
A birth chart wheel looks complicated, but you can read it one layer at a time. Here's the order experienced astrologers use — follow it and the chart starts to make sense fast.
Step 1: Start with the Big Three
Find your Sun, Moon and Rising signs first. These set the foundation — your identity, emotions and outward style — before you add any detail.
Step 2: Note the planets and their signs
Next, look at where each planet sits by sign. Mercury shows how you think, Venus how you love, Mars how you act. Each planet in its sign is a distinct part of your personality.
Step 3: Add the houses
Now see which house each planet falls in. The houses are twelve life areas — the planet's sign is how it works, the house is where. Venus in the 10th house, for example, brings love and beauty into your career and public life.
Step 4: Look at the aspects
Finally, notice the lines across the chart — the aspects — which show how planets interact. Harmonious aspects (trines, sextiles) flow easily; tense ones (squares, oppositions) create friction and growth. You don't need these to start, but they add depth.
Take it slowly
Don't try to absorb the whole chart at once. Read one placement a day, look up what it means, and notice if it rings true. Over a few weeks the chart goes from a confusing wheel to a portrait you recognise.
