What are the astrology houses?

If the zodiac signs describe how planetary energy expresses, the houses describe where in your life it plays out. The 12 houses are a wheel anchored to the exact moment and place you were born — which is why your birth time matters. Your rising sign marks the start of the 1st house, and the houses unfold from there around the chart.

The 12 houses at a glance

The 1st house is where your chart begins — it governs your identity, physical appearance, and the way you instinctively approach life. Its cusp is your Ascendant or rising sign, so this house colours the very first impression you make on the world. More on the 1st house →

The 2nd house rules your material world and your sense of self-worth — what you own, what you earn, and what you truly value. It shows your relationship with money and security, and how you build a stable foundation. More on the 2nd house →

The 3rd house governs how you think, speak and learn — your everyday mind, communication style, siblings, and immediate environment. It's the house of curiosity, information and the connections close to home. More on the 3rd house →

The 4th house is your foundation — home, family, roots and emotional security. Sitting at the base of the chart (the IC), it represents your private self, where you come from, and the inner world you retreat to. More on the 4th house →

The 5th house is where you shine and play — creativity, romance, children, hobbies and pure self-expression. It rules everything you do for the joy of it, and the way you give your gifts to the world. More on the 5th house →

The 6th house rules your daily grind — work, health, routines, habits and acts of service. It's the house of how you keep your life and body running, and how you refine and improve yourself through effort. More on the 6th house →

The 7th house is the house of the 'other' — marriage, committed partnerships and one-on-one relationships of every kind. Its cusp is your Descendant, which describes the qualities you seek (and attract) in a partner. More on the 7th house →

The 8th house is the chart's most intense — sex, death, rebirth, deep intimacy, shared resources and the hidden forces that transform us. It rules merged finances, inheritance, and everything we experience in the depths with another person. More on the 8th house →

The 9th house expands your horizons — long-distance travel, higher education, philosophy, religion and the search for meaning. It's where you grow beyond your roots and form your worldview. More on the 9th house →

The 10th house sits at the top of your chart — career, public reputation, ambition and your role in the wider world. Its cusp is the Midheaven, the most visible point in your chart, describing how you're seen professionally. More on the 10th house →

The 11th house is your social world — friendships, communities, networks, and your hopes and dreams for the future. It rules the groups you belong to and the causes you give yourself to. More on the 11th house →

The 12th house is the most mysterious — the unconscious, dreams, solitude, spirituality and everything hidden from view. It rules what we keep private, what we surrender, and the inner world we meet in stillness. More on the 12th house →

Frequently asked questions

What are the 12 houses in astrology?

The 12 houses are sections of your birth chart, each ruling a different area of life — from identity and money to relationships, career and the unconscious. Where your planets fall among the houses shows where their energy plays out.

How do I find my houses?

You need your exact birth time and place. The free birth chart calculator on this page computes which sign and house every planet occupies, instantly and privately in your browser.

Why are some of my houses empty?

Most people have empty houses — there are 12 houses but only 10 major planets, so several houses will have none. An empty house is read through the sign on its cusp and the placement of that sign's ruler.

What house system do you use?

By default we use Placidus, the most common modern house system. The birth chart calculator also supports whole-sign houses if you prefer.
