What Is a Void of Course Moon?
June 17, 2026 · 4 min read
If you've ever heard an astrologer say 'don't start anything important right now, the Moon is void,' you've met the void of course Moon. It's a small but practical piece of astrology that happens every single day — and once you know about it, you can time things around it.
What 'void of course' means
As the Moon travels through a zodiac sign, it forms aspects (angles) to the planets. The void of course period begins after the Moon makes its last major aspect in a sign and lasts until it enters the next sign. During that gap the Moon is, in a sense, drifting — connected to nothing — which is why it's called 'void of course'.
Why it matters
The Moon governs instinct, emotion and momentum, so when it's void, plans tend to fizzle. Tradition holds that things begun during a void Moon 'come to nothing' — decisions get reversed, purchases disappoint, meetings wander. It's not dangerous, just unproductive for new beginnings.
What to do (and not do)
Avoid launching anything you want to stick: signing contracts, making big purchases, starting jobs, sending important pitches or having make-or-break conversations. Instead, use void windows for routine, low-stakes or reflective tasks — admin, tidying, rest, brainstorming, or anything you're happy to redo. They're often short (minutes to hours), so you can simply wait them out.
How to track it
Void periods happen a few times a day and vary in length, so you need to check the current sky rather than guess. A void of course Moon tracker tells you whether the Moon is void right now and when it next changes sign — handy for timing the moments that actually matter.
