What Does Mercury Retrograde Mean?

A few times a year, the planet Mercury appears to move backwards across the sky. It's the most famous astrological event — and the most misunderstood. Here's what it actually means.
It's an optical illusion (that's real)
Mercury never truly reverses. The backward motion is an effect of perspective as Earth overtakes Mercury in orbit — like a faster car making a slower one seem to drift backwards. It's real, predictable, and happens three to four times a year for about three weeks.
What it means in astrology
Mercury rules communication, thinking, technology and travel. So when it's retrograde, the tradition is to expect miscommunications, tech hiccups, travel delays and misunderstandings — and to slow down, double-check and revisit rather than rush ahead.
What to do (and not do)
Think of the “re-” words: review, revise, reflect, reconnect, repair. It's a good time to finish old projects, back up your devices and tie up loose ends — and a trickier time to sign contracts, buy electronics or launch something brand new. Mostly, it's a useful nudge to communicate carefully and read the fine print.
Should you worry?
No. Plenty of good things happen during Mercury retrograde, and treating it as a curse just creates anxiety. Use it as a built-in reminder to be a little more careful and a little more patient — then carry on.
